What is EMPHASIS?

EMPHASIS — the European Research Infrastructure for Plant Phenotyping — is a distributed infrastructure with installations and services across Europe, and a Coordination Office in Belgium. Working at a pan-European scale, we enable researchers and innovators to work seamlessly across geographies and disciplines, reducing duplication, improving comparability of results, and delivering better insights for sustainable innovation in agriculture, the environment, and plant-based bioeconomy.

Mission

EMPHASIS provides a unified, state-of-the-art plant phenotyping infrastructure, with interconnected facilities, tools, data, and expertise across Europe.

EMPHASIS empowers plant- and crop-based research and innovation to address urgent challenges in food security, sustainability and climate resilience, and health.

It brings the power of plant phenotyping to bear in supporting the development of innovative and resilient plant-based systems — driving scientific excellence, economic opportunity, environmental sustainability, and wellbeing in Europe and beyond.

Vision

EMPHASIS aspires to be an enduring, trusted, globally connected pan-European research infrastructure that enables seamless access to state-of-the-art plant phenotyping facilities, tools, data, and expertise.

By integrating plant phenotyping with broader research practices, EMPHASIS will drive a step-change in the efficiency and impact of plant and crop science research.

With our pan-European, unified presence, EMPHASIS will accelerate the generation of new knowledge, and its translation into solutions and innovations — serving the evolving needs of researchers, industry, policymakers, and society, and reinforcing Europe’s global leadership in plant-based solutions for a changing world.
