Uncovering the Secrets of Plants
EMPHASIS participated with an interactive booth in the Science is Wonderful! exhibition of the European Research and Innovation Days in Brussels.
Science is wonderful! took place 25-26 September and was open to everyone, and EU Commissioner Tibor Navracsics inaugurated the exhibition by highlighting the importance of inspiring the next generation of young researchers for the benefit of the whole European Union.
This said, the event kicked off with a science hunt for school children. At the interactive EMPHASIS booth, they discovered plant traits which are usually invisible: they identified plants by their roots, compared plant temperatures with a heat camera, and, using blue LED lights, they were able to distinguish real from fake plants by their red glow.
The EMPHASIS team explained to visitors of all ages what plant phenotyping is about, how researchers use it to improve food production in a changing climate and why research infrastructures are important. EMPHASIS also presented partner and cluster projects at the booth.
The event succeeded in spreading enthusiasm for science presenting around seventy European projects in a way that was exciting and accessible to everyone - from school children to policy makers.
